Saturday, perhaps one of the worst May Saturdays weather-wise in recent memory, the Boys and Girls Track teams competed in the KLAA Lakes Conference Championships. Enduring miserable conditions including a brief spurt of hail, Lakeland student-athletes performed strongly enough to claim 3rd place for both teams. In earning its 3rd place finish, the Girls team took 1st Place in 5 events.
Seniors Emma Nuemann (pole vault) and Reina Troxell (discus) each earned the prestigious honor of Conference Champion, with Nuemann clearing 11’0″ in her event and Troxell throwing 120’4″ in hers. Freshman Grace Stark earned an extremely rare 2 individual Conference Champion honors by winning the 100m hurdles and the 100m dash. Stark also ran the opening leg of the 1st Place 4x200m relay team, with Marisa Sailus, Haley Rathwell, and Isabel Fairbanks joining her.
The Boys team was led by senior Jackson Grzymkowski’s two 2nd-place finishes in the 800m and 1600m races, both of which were virtual dead-even finishes. Senior Zack Confer finished 3rd in the shot put and 4th in the discus, earning All-Conference honors (top 4) for both events. Dylan Kutzleb (long jump) and David Vella (high jump) also earned All-Conference honors. Jason Dernay took 3rd in the 110 hurdles, and the 4x800m relay team, comprised of Drew Wenger, Hunter Lukes, Cody McComas, and Grzymkowski, took 2nd place.
